Dean LeBaron, founder of Batterymarch Financial
Management in 1969, directed
the firm's pioneering advances in the mid-1970s in the
application of computer
technology and modeling techniques, first in the US
market and then in
international and emerging markets. Today, Batterymarch
is one of the
investment management subsidiaries of Legg, Mason, which
manages over $250
billion through several independently operating firms.
Sparked 20 years ago by his study of the application of
physical science
principles (e.g., quantum physics) to investment
strategy, Dean pursues his
interest in complexity through Complexity Digest [www.ComDig.com],
a webzine
he publishes, and through association with the Santa Fe
Institute and the New
England Complex Systems Institute and their linking of
complex adaptive
systems to dynamic social systems, including
investments. Drawing on input
from 30 recognized experts, he has written The Ultimate
Investor and The
Ultimate Book of Investment Quotations, published in
Spring 1999 by Capstone

Dr Michael Berry, Ph.D.
Michael Berry has been a portfolio manager for both
Heartland Advisors and Kemper Scudder where he
successfully managed small and mid cap value portfolios.
Dr. Berry has specialized in the study of behavioral
strategies for investing and has been published in a
number of academic and practitioner journals. His
definitive work on earnings surprise, with David Dreman,
was published in 1995 in the Financial Analysts Journal.
Previously, Dr. Berry was a professor of investments at
the Colgate Darden Graduate School of Business
Administration at the University of Virginia and has
also held the Wheat First Endowed Chair at James Madison
University.
Dr. Berry is a respected and dynamic speaker. He
regularly presents around the world on topics such as
value investing, the role of Austrian Economics in
investment management, behavioural investing strategies
and is a specialist in developing case studies to teach
investors how to invest. While a professor, he published
a case book,
Managing Investments: A Case Approach.
He has recently focused on the role of precious metals
in the asset allocation of the individual investor.
Dr. Berry publishes Morning Notes by Michael Berry,

Mr. Kinnear graduated from the University of Toronto in
1969 with a B.Sc. degree and received a C.F.A.
designation in 1979. In 1982 he founded Pengrowth
Management Limited and in 1988 created Pengrowth Energy
Trust. Prior to 1982 he was research director and
partner with a securities firm in Montreal and
previously worked as a securities analyst in Toronto and
London, England.

HENRY GROPPE
Henry Groppe founded Groppe, Long & Littell in 1955. He
has 55 years of experience in the oil, natural gas and
petrochemical industries, including positions with
Arabian American Oil Company, Dow Chemical, Monsanto and
Texaco.
He is a fellow of the American Institute of Chemical
Engineers and has served as a charter member of the
Texas Governor’s Energy Council and a director of the
United States Energy Association (the U.S. member
committee to the World Energy Council).
Mr. Groppe is a distinguished engineering graduate of
the University of Texas and is a former officer in the
U.S. Navy.

Larry Jeddeloh
Editor of The Institutional Strategist; Managing
Director and Chief
Investment Officer of TIS Group in Minneapolis.
He is an experienced investment management professional
with
over 27 years in the business. Larry founded TIS Group
in 1995.
Previously, Larry held the position of Chief Investment
Officer of Resource
Capital Advisers, with responsibilities for $1 billion
in assets. Prior to joining
Resource, he spent two years in Switzerland with the
Union Bank of Switzerland
in Zürich, where he was a Vize Director and the Chief
Investment Strategist in
the Institutional Global Asset Management Group. In the
1980s, he was Director
of Equity Research at the Leuthold Group, a well-known
institutional research
firm in Minneapolis, Minnesota, for seven years.
He was also a partner of Leuthold and Anderson

brokerage firm.
Larry earned his Bachelor of Science in Finance and a
Masters of Business
Administration degree from University of St. Thomas, St.
Paul, Minnesota. He
has taught courses in investments and corporate finance
at the University of
Minnesota, Northwestern College, and Augsburg College.

John Embry joined SAM as Chief Investment Strategist in March 2003
with focus on the Sprott Gold and Precious Minerals Fund and the
Sprott Strategic Offshore Gold Fund, Ltd. He plays an instrumental
role in the corporate and investment policy of the firm. Mr.
Embry, an industry expert in precious metals, has researched the
gold sector for over thirty years and has accumulated industry
experience as a portfolio management specialist since 1963.
After graduating from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor
of Commerce degree, John Embry began his investment career as a
stock selection analyst and Portfolio Manager at Great West Life.
He then became Vice President of Pension Investments for the
entire firm. After 23 years with the company, John became partner
with United Bond and Share, the investment counseling firm acquired
by Royal Bank in 1987. Since then, John was Vice-President,
Equities and Portfolio Manager at RBC Global Investment
Management, a $33 billion organization where he oversaw $5 billion
in assets, including the flagship $2.9 billion Royal Canadian
Equity Fund and the $250 million Royal Precious Metals Fund, the

Donald W. Lindsey,
Donald W. Lindsey
joined The George Washington University (GW) in
April 2003 as Chief Investment Officer
responsible for management of the University’s $960
million endowment.
He is also a Professorial Lecturer of Finance at GW
and teaches Applied Portfolio Management in the MBA
program.
Prior to joining GW, he established the University
of Toronto Asset Management Corporation (UTAM) in
May 2000
and served as its first President and Chief
Executive Officer. UTAM was established to manage
the University of Toronto’s
CAD$ 4.0 billion in endowment and pension assets.
He began his career with the University of Virginia
Investment Management Company in 1987, where he
served initially
as Investment Analyst and proceeded to become
Assistant Director of Investments, Senior Investment
Officer and Director.
He has taught in the McIntire School of Commerce at
the University of Virginia and the Rotman School of
Management at the University of Toronto.
In addition, he has appeared several times as a
guest on Toronto-based Report onBusiness
Television.
He holds the CFA designation, and has also taught
CFA exam preparation and other courses in Croatia,
Romania, Japan,
South Africa, Italy, the United Kingdom, and
Switzerland.
He is a member of the Investment Advisory Committee
of the Virginia Retirement System.
Mr. Lindsey holds a BA in Political Science from
Virginia Tech and an MBA from James Madison
University.

Carleton University

founded Sprott Securities Inc. (SSI), which has become
one of Canada's
